Brazilian Wax Aftercare: What to Do After Your Appointment
After a Brazilian wax, keep the area clean, cool, and friction-free for the first 24 to 48 hours. That means loose cotton underwear, lukewarm showers, no workouts, hot tubs, pools, saunas, or sex, and no scented products on the area. From day three, start gentle exfoliation two to three times a week to keep ingrown hairs away until your next appointment.
The First 24 to 48 Hours: Do's and Don'ts
Right after waxing, follicles are open and skin is more reactive than usual. What you do in this window has the biggest effect on whether you end up with smooth skin or red bumps.
Do:
- Wear loose, breathable cotton underwear and bottoms.
- Rinse with lukewarm water and pat the area dry gently.
- Use a cool compress for 5 to 10 minutes if the area feels warm or tender.
- Apply a thin layer of fragrance-free aloe vera gel if you want something soothing.
- Wash hands before touching the area.
Don't:
- Work out, sweat heavily, or sit in hot tubs, saunas, or steam rooms.
- Swim in pools, lakes, or the ocean.
- Have sex, which adds friction and bacteria to open follicles.
- Use scented soaps, lotions, body sprays, or deodorant on the area.
- Tan, use a tanning bed, or apply self-tanner.
- Wear tight leggings, jeans, or synthetic underwear.
- Touch, scratch, or pick at any bumps.
Redness, Bumps, and Itching: What's Normal
Some redness and small raised bumps right after a Brazilian are a normal reaction to hair being removed from the root. For most people, redness fades within a few hours and bumps settle within a day or two. A few tiny pinpoint spots of blood, especially on a first wax, are also normal. Mild itching as skin calms down is common; a cool compress or aloe usually helps more than scratching, which can break skin and invite infection.
How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs Between Appointments
Ingrown hairs are the most common complaint after a Brazilian, and they're mostly preventable:
- Exfoliate from day three. Use a soft exfoliating mitt or a gentle chemical exfoliant two to three times a week to clear dead skin that traps regrowth.
- Moisturize daily. Soft, hydrated skin lets new hair break through the surface more easily. Use a fragrance-free lotion once the first 48 hours have passed.
- Don't shave between waxes. Shaving cuts hair at a blunt angle that is more likely to curl back into the skin, and it undoes the finer regrowth that regular waxing builds.
- Keep clothing loose on workout days, and change out of sweaty clothes quickly.
If an ingrown hair does appear, a warm compress and continued gentle exfoliation usually bring it to the surface. Don't dig it out with tweezers or a needle.
Sweat, Heat, and Richmond Summers
Richmond's humid summers make the first 48 hours more important. Sweat sitting on freshly waxed skin is one of the most common causes of post-wax bumps, so on hot days stay in air-conditioning where you can, skip outdoor runs and river trails until day three, and keep a spare pair of loose cotton underwear on hand. If you have a beach trip or pool day planned, book your wax at least two to three days before it rather than the day before.
Showering, Swimming, and Sex After a Brazilian
You can shower the same day; just keep the water lukewarm rather than hot and skip scented body wash on the area. Wait at least 48 hours before swimming in chlorinated pools or open water, and before using hot tubs or saunas. For sex, give skin 24 to 48 hours to settle, since friction and bacteria on open follicles are a common cause of irritation and breakouts.
When to Call a Doctor
Contact a doctor if you notice redness that is spreading or getting worse after 72 hours, skin that feels hot to the touch, pus-filled bumps that are painful or growing, or a fever. These can be signs of folliculitis or another infection that may need treatment. If you think wax burned or lifted the skin, keep it clean and covered and get it checked rather than treating it at home.
When to Book Your Next Brazilian Wax
Most clients come back every 4 to 6 weeks, once regrowth reaches about 1/4 inch. Staying on that rhythm keeps hair finer and appointments more comfortable over time. If you're still deciding whether waxing is right for you, compare it in Brazilian wax vs shaving, or read how much a Brazilian wax hurts and how that changes with regular visits. Brazilian Wax Aftercare FAQs
How long after a Brazilian wax can I shower?
You can shower the same day. Use lukewarm water rather than hot, skip scented soap on the area, and pat dry gently afterward.
When can I work out after a Brazilian wax?
Wait 24 to 48 hours before workouts or anything that makes you sweat heavily. Sweat and friction on open follicles are a leading cause of red bumps and irritation.
How long do bumps last after a Brazilian wax?
Redness usually fades within a few hours, and small bumps typically settle within one to two days. Bumps that are spreading, painful, or pus-filled after 72 hours should be checked by a doctor.
Can I shave between Brazilian waxes?
It's best not to. Shaving cuts hair at a blunt angle that is more likely to cause ingrown hairs, and it resets the finer regrowth that makes each wax less painful.
How long should I wait to have sex after a Brazilian wax?
Give skin 24 to 48 hours to settle. Friction and bacteria on freshly opened follicles can cause irritation, bumps, or infection.
