How to Prepare for Your First Brazilian Wax
To prepare for a Brazilian wax, let hair grow to about 1/4 inch (roughly 2 to 3 weeks without shaving), exfoliate gently 24 to 48 hours beforehand, and arrive with clean, dry skin free of lotion, oil, or deodorant. Staying hydrated and skipping caffeine or alcohol the day of also helps reduce sensitivity during the appointment.
Hair Length and Timing
Wax needs something to grip, so hair that's too short won't come out cleanly and hair that's too long can make the first pass more uncomfortable than it needs to be. Stop shaving, trimming, or plucking the area 2 to 3 weeks before your appointment so hair reaches roughly 1/4 inch, about the length of a grain of rice. If you're coming straight from shaving, your first session may take a little longer since the technician is working with uneven growth.
Skincare Before the Appointment
Exfoliate the area gently with a soft scrub or glove 24 to 48 hours before your visit to clear dead skin cells and lower the odds of ingrown hairs afterward. Skip exfoliation on the day of your appointment itself, since freshly scrubbed skin can be more reactive to wax. Avoid retinoids, AHAs, or other strong actives on the area for 2 to 3 days beforehand, as they thin skin and raise irritation risk during waxing.
Day-of-Appointment Habits
Shower before you arrive and skip lotion, oil, deodorant, and powder on the area, since any residue creates a barrier that keeps wax from sticking properly. Drink water in the hours before your visit, and skip caffeine and alcohol, which can tighten pores and make skin more sensitive. Loose, breathable clothing (cotton underwear, sweatpants, or a loose dress) prevents friction on freshly waxed skin afterward. If you're especially nervous about discomfort, an over-the-counter pain reliever 30 to 45 minutes beforehand is a reasonable option for most people, though check with your doctor if you have any conditions that affect what you can take.
What Happens at the Appointment
A first Brazilian wax typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. At Richmond Waxing Studio, we use hard wax for this area, which grips coarse hair without pulling at the surrounding skin the way strip wax can, and pricing is confirmed before we start. First Brazilian Wax FAQs
What should you not do before a Brazilian wax?
Don't shave in the weeks leading up, don't use retinoids, AHAs, or strong scrubs in the 2 to 3 days before, avoid tanning or long sun exposure, skip lotion, oil, or deodorant on the area the day of, and avoid heavy workouts right beforehand.
How bad does a first Brazilian wax hurt?
Most people describe a brief, sharp sting rather than constant pain, often rated 3 to 8 out of 10 depending on individual pain tolerance and hair coarseness. Discomfort usually eases within a few sessions as hair thins and you get used to the sensation.
What is proper etiquette for getting a Brazilian wax?
Arrive on time, mention any allergies or skin sensitivities before starting, and know that technicians treat Brazilian waxing as a routine, professional service. There's no need to over-groom beforehand, and following aftercare instructions helps the results last.
